MICALLEF. On February 3, CHARLES, of Hamrun, aged 77, passed peacefully away at St Luke's Hospital, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his children Tessie, Tony and his wife Marlene, Marisa and her husband Frankie, Josette and her husband Martin, his sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital today at 2 p.m. for St Cajetan parish church, Hamrun, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2.30 p.m., followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata cemetery.

Swimming Lessons

Skolasport, organised by the Malta Sports Council and sponsored by Kellogg's, is accepting applications for swimming sessions due to commence on February 17.

The lessons will take place in a heated pool every Saturday morning between 9 and 10.30 and from 10.30 to noon at the National Pool Complex, Tal-Qroqq.

Participants will be given individual attention and will learn the four basic strokes, namely backstroke, breaststroke, free-style and butterfly, as well as skills that include diving. Carmelite Conference

The Discalced Carmelite Friars will hold a conference by Fr Alexander Vella, O. Carm. at the Madonna tal-Karmnu hall, Valley Road, Birkirkara on Friday at 7 p.m.

The theme is Each Of You Is To... Ponder The Lord's Law, Day And Night And Keep Watch At His Prayers (Rule of Albert, no. 8): The Holy Scriptures And Prayer In St Albert's Rule.

Another conference by Fr Vella will be on None Of The Brothers Must Lay Claim To Anything As His Own, But You Are To Possess Everything In Common (Rule of St Albert, no. 10): The Community And The Spirit Of Poverty In The Rule Of St Albert.

It will be held at the same venue on February 15 at 7 p.m.

A lenten retreat will be held at the Retreat House, Tas-Silg, Marsaxlokk from March 9 at 6 p.m. to March 11 at 1 p.m.

The retreat - on the them of Lent: A Time To Relive The Sacrament Of Baptism - will be led by Fr George Bezzina, parish priest of Fontana.

Shared ownership applications

The Housing Authority has said applications under Legal Notice 2 Shared Ownership have now been processed and each applicant will receive a letter stating whether the application is valid and the number of points awarded.

A list showing points awarded to all applicants who applied under the same category along with an objection form will be included in the letter.

Should any applicant wish to object to the number of points awarded or any other decision taken, s/he can submit an objection on the form provided by February 14.

James Bond Prize

Maryanne Pace has won the Eden Cinemas and Exotique James Bond Competition prize, an exclusive limited edition James Bond DVD collection comprising all Bond movies (40 DVDs), worth more than Lm220.

After the launch of Casino Royale, the latest in the James Bond series, competitors had to send an SMS with the name of the new James Bond movie.

Bernardete Doorley won a Goodmans DVD Player while George Vella won a DVD of the James Bond movie Golden Eye.

The new competition now relates to the new Rocky Balboa movie.

Sports programme

The Malta Sports Council has set up a community sports programme aimed at making physical activity an option to school age children in a familiar environment and at a convenient time in March.

The commission is meeting on a regular basis to analyse the needs of school age children between five and 10 so that the programme will be directly aimed to satisfy such needs. The pilot programme will be introduced in four schools and will include 10 sessions of the children's favourite sports activities.

New Lounge Bar

The Westin Dragonara Resort has just refurbished its lobby lounge bar, now renamed ORVM Bar Lounge and Piano Bar, which opens daily from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.

The bar offers international drinks and world wine, while the snack menu varies from Mediterranean fare to oriental sushi, prepared by executive chef John Hornsby. It also offers the Westin Wellness Menu that includes an assortment of organic and healthy snacks.

Kick boxing

Evening classes in kick boxing, conducted by Noel Mercieca, start at Cynergi tomorrow at 7.30 p.m.

Mr Mercieca has been practicing in this martial art since the age of 12, and has been coaching for the last 10 years. Last year, his students won eight gold medals in the national championships and seven of them won European titles in October last year.

Diplomacy Conference

DiploFoundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, will hold an International Conference on the Diplomacy of Small States at the Coastline Hotel on Thursday and Friday.

Issues will be examined in case studies of small state diplomacy in modern international relations, multilateral negotiations and public diplomacy. The conference will also look at the challenges of the diplomatic training needs of small states.

The conference may be of interest to policy-makers and diplomats from small states, as well as academics working on the topic and students of international relations and diplomacy.
