Appreciation - Susan Farrugia Sacco
Ms Anna Stivala writes:
I wish to remember Susan forever in her teen years, when we were inseparable. It should not be difficult because she never changed. Enthusiastic, friendly, ready for a laugh, an incorrigible chatterbox, always impeccably groomed. Memories abound of endless chats on the phone or in Susan's bedroom. That was the Sixties. We weren't quite Mary Quant but we aspired to a watered-down version.
To this day, when I walk down Republic Street on my own, in my mind's eye I see Susan and myself walking to or from the then Junior College, and the sea of unknown faces gradually changes to familiar ones, mostly fellow students, today all established politicians or professionals. Inevitably, they called us 'id-Di u d-Do'.
But moreover, Susan had an inner goodness, a calm self-confidence born surely of her happy childhood and ever supporting parents, Connie and the late Alfred Laiviera, who doted on her, and of her strong faith in God which she openly professed.
Some months before her illness, she told me that she had reached a stage in life where she could feel that she was content, fulfilled and satisfied with her lot in life - surely an enviable capacity to feel grateful for and happy with what she had.
Despite the increasing responsibilities and positions she held in life, she never changed or put on any airs. Never would a birthday pass without Susan turning up punctually with a gift and a card and an opportunity to chat and bring ourselves up to date with news, trivial and less so; and this she did with her numerous relatives and friends.
During her illness, her hospital room and home were constantly filled with visitors. I sometimes felt concerned that we were tiring her but she never said as much. She had a knack of always pointing out and praising some particular talent or skill a person had when introducing people.
She always loved being surrounded by friends and she always introduced me, even in these later years, as her bridesmaid, which I had been.
Born on January 26, 1951, Susan was educated at Chiswick House School and later at the Convent of the Sacred Heart.
In 1971 she graduated with Honours in English from the Royal University of Malta and taught English and Religion at her old school practically for the rest of her life except when she was bringing up her two boys, holding the position of assistant head at the time of her untimely death.
She was a competent and efficient teacher and administrator; her work at the school gave her great joy and satisfaction and she felt it was her second home.
She was also an active and much-loved parishioner at St John of the Cross Church, Ta' Xbiex.
She married Mr Justice Carmelo (Lino) Farrugia Sacco in 1976 and they have two sons, David and Steven, both of them lawyers. Susan was a devoted, loving exemplary wife and mother, whose sense of loyalty to her dearest ones, coupled with her respect and love for them, was so evidently mirrored in their care for her during the final illness which ravaged her.
They supported her through the anguish of her illness with heroic love and devotion. And this support moved and sustained her. She constantly told her visitors how touched she was by the tenderness and care her husband and sons, and so many close relatives, showed her.
It is with profound sadness and disbelief that she has truly left us, that I write these few words as a commemoration, a celebration and a tribute to the life of my dearest and loyal friend.
All who knew and loved her watched helplessly and were inevitably appalled by the relentless toll the sickness took on her, especially in the last few weeks. Minutes after she died the news spread around Malta, "Sue is gone".
To her beloved family, Lino, David and Carmen, Steven and Albertine, her little grand daughter Martina, whose arrival was, in her words, "the best thing that happened to me this year," and to her mother, Connie, I extend my sympathy for their great loss. "In the midst of life we are in death".
Farewell, good and loyal friend. Till we meet again, Adieu.
