The operetta phenomenon
Musicologist Roberto Negri will be giving a lecture at the Sala Isouard of the Manoel Theatre on Thursday at 7 p.m.
He will talk on the ups and downs of the operetta phenomenon. Works like Il Paese dei Campanelli, Scugnizza, L'Acqua Cheta, La Vedova Allegra and others immediately conjure an exciting past; but does operetta have a future?
A versatile musician, Mro Negri won the San Remo Festival in 1969 with a song he penned for Adriano Celentano. He has collaborated with leading musicians like Claudio Abbado, Carlo Bergonzi, Giuseppe di Stefano and Zubin Mehta and managed his own record company for many years.
He is involved in the preparation of young opera singers at the Milan's La Scala theatre.
Bird show cancelled
The Gozo Bird Breeders Society said the annual exhibition it planned to hold next month has been cancelled as a precaution in view of the avian flu.
