Obituary

FARRUGIA. On November 25, CARMELA, widow of Clement, of Kirkop, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her children Joe, Victoria and her husband Paul Farrugia, Michael and his wife Grace, Mary, Carmelo and his wife Elena, Leonard and his wife Mary, her grandchildren, Maria, Diane, Pauline, Chris, Manuel and Michael, her brother Kalcidon and her sisters Guza and Vivi, in-laws, other relatives and friends. - R.I.P. The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital today at 2.30 p.m. for St Leonard parish church, Kirkop, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 3 p.m., followed by interment in the family vault at Qrendi cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Villa Mgr Gonzi, Siggiewi, will be appreciated.

Sociology seminars

Three special seminars will be held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of sociologist Max Weber's influential book The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism and to mark the 10th anniversary of the Work in Progress in the Social Studies (WIPSS) seminar.

The 10th annual WIPSS seminar's special guest speaker Ursula Apitzsch, professor of sociology at the J.W. Goethe University and Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, will give a talk on December 7. The venue is still to be announced.

Peter Mayo will give a talk - Revisiting Weber's Protestant Ethic - A Critical Exposition - at room 124 of the Mediterranean Institute at the university on Thursday.

Another seminar will be held on December 14, during which Paul Clough will explore his research The Muslim Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, also at the Mediterranean Institute.

The seminars, for which the public is welcome, will be held between 6 and 8 p.m.

Seminar On Violence Against Women

The Amnesty International Malta Group in collaboration with the National Council of Women will hold a seminar entitled Stop Violence Against Women at the Aula Magna of the Old University in Valletta on December 6 from 9 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.

The aim is to raise awareness about violence against women and take a stand against it.

Professionals from different fields have been invited to share their experiences, drawing from psychology, social work, human rights and law as well as exploring the perpetrator's perspective in this delicate issue.

The registration fee is Lm2.

Organ Concert

L'Unione Philharmonic Society of Luqa will present an organ concert at the Luqa parish church today week at 7.30 p.m. to round up celebrations marking its 125th anniversary.

The performer is international organist Peter Barraclough, who is renowned for his performances and compositions for the organ, with the participation of tenor Brian Cefai and soprano Michelle Cachia Castelletti.

The programme includes works by Barraclough, Bach, Gounod and Purcell among others.

Tickets are available from the premises of the society.

Paola Band Concert

The Christ the King Band, forming part of the G.M. Fra Antoine de Paule Philharmonic Society of Paola, will hold its fourth annual concert at the ballroom of the Radisson SAS Bay Point Resort in St Julians on December 8 at 7.30 p.m.

The band will be under the direction of Archibald Mizzi. It will render works by well-known composers including Rossini, Ferran, Verdi, Glinka, Markopoulos and Orff and Maltese composers Orazio Cachia and David Sammut.

Entrance is free and transport to the hotel and back after the concert will be available at 50c per person.

Power Line Fault

Enemalta Corporation said yesterday that a power cut in parts of San Gwann, L-Ibrag, Gharghur and in the limits of Naxxar on Thursday afternoon was due to an overhead line fault. Electricity was restored a couple of hours later, it said.
