Appreciation - Constance K/A Connie Fenech
Michela Spiteri writes:
When I received a text message one Saturday morning, letting me know that one of our favourite school teachers had died, I immediately made a beeline for The Times in the hope of making it to her funeral. Unfortunately, I was already too late.
Mrs Fenech was our Form One English and religion teacher. She was one of those teachers who had been at school forever. You find one in every school - the one who seems to have no beginning and no end - always there, part of the furniture, and who often becomes a vital part of the trappings you carry with you through life.
"Miss Fenech is going to be your teacher next year!" The prospect filled each and everyone of us with a sense of foreboding because she was reputed to be very strict. Looking back, I don't recall her as being particularly strict; what I do recall was her insistence that we wrote in blue ink and that our margins were ruled in a certain way - two centimetres wide, if my memory serves me.
I took to her the first day I sat in her class. She was a small, petite woman who commanded big respect and with her short hair she looked almost elf-like. She taught us my favourite subjects, English language and English literature, and we were at that critical stage, on the threshold of adulthood, a stage where an inexperienced teacher could do irreparable harm.
We were introduced to the arcane workings of a library, to poetry, to the Little Prince and she was brilliant at her job. She was thorough, methodical, tolerant, though she suffered fools badly.
When I try to picture her in my mind, she is wearing a white shirt and a navy blue skirt...
She had this way of winking. I was always up to something. She would take me aside and whisper some admonishment in my ear, then give me this wink which made it appear she was merely jesting, or even amused at my behaviour, like the time she caught me red-handed balancing this huge bible on top of the door - intended for the physics teacher.
When I think how much I grew up in her class, how many important things I must have learned then, that will stay with me for ever, I can only raise a glass to her memory and utter words of gratitude for having had Mrs Connie Fenech as my Form 1 teacher.
