Eko-Logika, the environmental group, has expressed solidarity with the Manikata farmers who are being evicted from the land they till to make way for a proposed golf course at ix-Xaghra l-Hamra.
According to Eko-Logika, the proposed golf course will destroy the livelihood of the farmers and take away the land they till only to be given to private businessmen for speculative purposes.
These were the same farmers who were promised that their livelihood would be guaranteed prior to Malta's accession to the EU, the group said, calling it a blatant case of social injustice.
It said a golf course would destroy garigue and agricultural land in an area as large as Sliema, consume vast amounts of water and be accompanied by the construction of buildings on virgin land.
It also said there was no social-scientific backing to the claims being made about the arrival of 30,000 golf tourists.
