Songs from Spain at upcoming lunchtime concert
Works by Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla and Gioachino Rossini will be performed
Music lovers are invited to step away from the bustle of the day and enjoy a lunchtime concert inspired by the rich colours and rhythms of Spain at Our Lady of Victory church in Valletta. Songs from Spain will take place on January 27 at 12.30pm in one of the capital’s most historic and intimate sacred spaces.
The concert is organised by the Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa and features mezzo-soprano Clare Ghigo alongside pianist Ramona Zammit Formosa. Together, the two musicians promise an engaging recital that blends folkloric charm, lyrical intimacy and dramatic expression.
The programme opens with selections from Enrique Granados’s Tonadillas en estilo antiguo, a set of miniature musical scenes that evoke the elegance, humour and character of Spanish life through refined and nostalgic writing.
This is followed by Manuel de Falla’s Siete canciones populares españolas, a much-loved song cycle that draws on traditional melodies and explores a wide emotional range, from tender reflection to fiery passion. The recital concludes with Gioachino Rossini’s Canzonetta spagnuola, a light-hearted and sparkling tribute to Spanish style infused with the composer’s distinctive operatic voice.
Entrance is by a suggested donation of €13. Tickets may be obtained at the venue before the concert or by contacting baroccobookings@gmail.com or baroccomalta@gmail.com, or by phone on 7968 0952.
