South African President Jacob Zuma was briefly in Malta last night while his aircraft was refuelled at the airport.

He arrived from Tripoli where he yesterday led a delegation of African Union leaders at a meeting with Muammar Gaddafi.

Mr Zuma said later that Gaddafi had accepted their proposed "road map" for a ceasefire with rebels.

"We have completed our mission with the brother leader, and the brother leader's delegation has accepted the road map as presented by us," said Mr Zuma when speaking in Tripoli.

Some of the African leaders are today due to meet the leaders of the rebels in Benghazi. Mr Zuma himself will not be going to Benghazi.

No talks with the Maltese government were held during Mr Zuma's short visit.
