Southbound Triq Aldo Moro fully reopened after nearby field fire

The road was closed for almost two hours

Updated 5.33pm

The main arterial road heading southbound through Marsa has been fully reopened after it was partly closed on Friday afternoon for almost two hours due to a fire near Triq Aldo Moro.

Drivers were told by Transport Malta to seek alternative routes as emergency services brought the fire under control.

Sources close to the Civil Protection Department said rubbish had caught fire in a field which was directly adjacent to the road. Smoke billowing across the road made it dangerous for drivers.

One lane heading southbound has been reopened and the remaining lanes will be reopened "later", the CPD said.

Four fire engines and 10 fire fighters were involved in the operation as an ambulance stood by. No injuries were reported.

The police and Transport Malta were on site to manage the traffic.
