Southern Spain bakes in 46 degree temperatures

The previous record was 45.2C

Temperatures in southern Spain soared to 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, a new record for June, the national weather agency said on Monday.

The mercury climbed to its new high at 3.40pm in Huelva, near the border with Portugal, edging out the previous record, 45.2C that was set in 1965 in Seville, it said.

Spain is among European countries gripped by a heatwave that is expected to last until Wednesday.

The last three years have been the hottest on record for Spain, according to weather authorities.
