World basketball champions Spain have appointed Italian Sergio Scariolo as coach on a four-year term through the 2012 London Olympics, the Spanish basketball federation (FEB) said yesterday.

Scariolo, 47, will combine his new duties with his current role coaching Russian club Khimki, which he joined just over a month ago.

Scariolo has been a professional coach since 1980 and had stints at various Italian and Spanish clubs including Bologna, Tau Ceramica Vitoria, Real Madrid and Unicaja Malaga, winning coach of the year in Italy in 1994 and Spain in 2000.

The post of Spain coach had been vacant since August following Aito Garcia Reneses's decision to step down after steering the nation to silver at the Beijing Olympics.
