I would like to elaborate on the comments that Parliamentary Secretary Edwin Vassallo recently made on the subject of CCTV and speed cameras.
I believe that Mr Vassallo's statement was found to be interesting by many, in particular drivers, when he referred to CCTV/speed cameras which were lately set up in main roads. His comment that they are good to have but not to have them operating at such extremes is one I fully endorse.
I feel that the present speed limits existing at Regional Road and Xemxija Hill are not compatible with the normal minimum speed of main roads. Most probably the authorities who allowed such limits are not involved in driving at all since the 45 kilometres per hour speed limit is hardly fit for any countryside or our bad roads, let alone for our main roads! An average of 65 kilometres per hour would have been more than reasonable.
I fully agree with Mr Vassallo's comment that the councils are not there to raise money but to look out for the interests of the Maltese, in a more justified manner. I feel that the Parliamentary Secretary should impose that local councils alter the limit of speed cameras immediately and not await for the councils to earn a huge profit from these unacceptable cameras.
I cannot understand why common sense does not reign within our organisations as I believe many drivers have complained about the existing speed cameras, yet the authorities still refuse to take any action!
