The proposed Spinola Bay rehabilitation project will not be taken in hand in the immediate future, Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi said in reply to a parliamentary question.

The €1.3 million project was announced in December by then Resources Minister George Pullicino. The project, on 2,400 square metres, was to see the pedestrian areas expand on both sides of the square.

The central roundabout was to be removed and the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which stands in its centre would be placed at an area near the police station.

Retractable bollards to completely close off the square on special occasions, such as the feast, to make the area fully pedestrian, were also planned.

Mr Pullicino had said there would loading and unloading bays and space for police cars but the other parking spots would be removed.

However, a private car park project near the Church would make up for the removal of these spaces.

The project was to include two ground fountains, benches and unobtrusive trees.

Work on the project was due to start in April and take eight months.

The parliamentary question was put by Kristy Debono (PN).
