Relegation Row: FIFA could suspend Portugal from international football for failing to resolve a relegation row that disrupted the start of the Premier League season. The president of the Portuguese federation (FPF), Gilberto Madail, met FIFA on Thursday to explain the legal wrangle involving Club Gil Vicente. Madail said he was "very pessimistic" about FIFA's decision, which should be announced in the next two to three days. Media reported UEFA was considering replacing Porto, Sporting and Benfica in the Champions league with Chievo, Osasuna and Ajax.

Trezeguet: David Trezeguet has pulled out of France's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Georgia and Italy because of a muscle injury yesterday. Trezeguet complained about a muscle problem when he joined the French squad at the Clairefontaine training camp on Monday morning.

Rooney: Everton manager David Moyes is to sue his former protege and England striker Wayne Rooney over comments made in the 20-year-old's autobiography. Rooney made his first-team breakthrough under Moyes at Goodison Park as a teenager. In his book, "My Story So Far", Rooney said his soured relationship with Moyes hastened his departure and that he would have gone almost anywhere to get away from the Everton boss.

Security: Hungarian police and football authorities are to step up security at today's European qualifer with Norway to prevent Hungarian fans endangering the country's Euro 2012 bid by displaying anti-Slovak banners. Tension between the two ex-communist countries over the treatment of Hungarian minorities in Slovakia has risen in recent weeks after a far right party became part of a coalition government in Slovakia.

Deportivo: Diego Tristan and Argentina midfielder Lionel Scaloni have been released from their contracts with Deportivo La Coruna. Both players had been left out of coach Joaquin Caparros's plans for the season, but failed to secure moves to other clubs before the end of the Aug. 31 deadline.

Protest Threat: Protest action by Dutch power workers could lead to the national team being fined and possibly excluded from Euro 2008, the Dutch football federation KNVB warned yesterday. The union of Dutch power workers LME said they would cut off electricity supplies in and around the Eindhoven stadium during a Sept. 6 Euro 2008 qualifier against Belarus to protest against a controversial power bill. The KNVB said it would try to block the protest and file a lawsuit against the energy workers' union.
