The interim administration board which has been running the Tal-Qroqq pool for the past six years was officially dissolved on Saturday, as the pool operations have been taken over by the Sports Council.

As a result of the take-over, 19 workers have been laid off.

The council had been taking over the role of the Department of Sports since January of last year, including government staff employed at this department, and at all sports facilities previously managed or under the responsibility of the department.

Both the Cottonera Sports Complex and the Marsa Sports Complex are already being managed by the council.

The pool complex employees paid directly by the NPC administration board had indefinite contracts, which stated that should the administration board be dissolved, their work contract would be terminated.

The staff were addressed by NPC executive chairman Maurice Gruppetta and council officials on Friday. Also present was Katryn Borg, the council director, who will be handling the taking over process of the national pool complex from the administration board.

Workers were advised to register for work at the Employment and Training Corporation. In the coming days the council will be issuing a call for applications with the ETC to fill up all vacant posts within the council organisation, including the NPC.

Interviews for all these posts are expected to commence later on this month.
