Golf: Jason Day emulated his boyhood idol Tiger Woods when he clinched a one-stroke victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida on Sunday. He was not at the top of his game, but did enough to clinch his fifth victory in his past 12 starts on the PGA Tour. With tournament host Arnold Palmer watching on, Day finished at 17-under-par 271, while American Kevin Chappell (69) claimed second place on 16-under after bogeying the last. Day, 28, collects $1.134 million for his eighth victory on tour.

Basket, NBA: German Dirk Nowitzki continues to pile up the years and the points. The NBA’s sixth all-time leading scorer racked up a historic 40 points to carry Dallas Mavericks past Portland Trail Blazers 132-120 in overtime on Sunday at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Mavericks (35-35) also halted a five-game home losing streak and clinched the season series against Portland (36-35) as both teams battle to make the play-offs. Nowitzki became only the fourth player in NBA history to score at least 40 at age 37 or older. The others are Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.

Rugby: Dual code England international Sam Burgess has been cleared of seriously damaging his neck or spine in a tackle during a National Rugby League match on Sunday. A rain-soaked Sydney Cricket Ground fell silent when the South Sydney Rabbitohs forward charged head-first into a line of defenders only to slump to the ground shouting in pain in Sunday’s loss to the St George Dragons. The 27-year-old re-turned to the field for the Rabbitohs earlier this month after an unsuccessful 18-month stint in English rugby union.
