Tottenham manager Juande Ramos said his struggling team needed time to gel following the departures of strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane.

Despite spending almost 70 million pounds on new players during the close-season, Spurs are rooted to the foot of the table with one point from four games.

Spurs were booed off the pitch following their 2-1 home defeat against Aston Villa on Monday, and Ramos said his side needed time to gel.

Spurs sold Ireland captain Keane, who spent six years at White Hart Lane, to Liverpool in July while Bulgaria striker Berbatov moved to Manchester United earlier this month on a transfer deadline day move.

"The team is playing a long time with Berbatov and Robbie Keane and are so used to playing with them as habitual strikers," Ramos told a news conference on Wednesday, a day before Spurs host Wisla Krakow in the UEFA Cup.

"Now it's a different situation. We need to start from the beginning again. We need to understand this situation - a new situation for the team and all the players.

"The worst thing for us was losing Berbatov at the last moment and we didn't have time to sign a new player. I think in some positions we are better, in others we are worse.

"The fans, myself, the club - we want the best performances quickly, but we need to be patient. This process takes time.

"I am worried because we need points at the moment. To only have one point is a difficult situation to be in. I'd say to the supporters that they need to have confidence in the team.

"We have a good squad and I'm sure in the future we'll be better. I don't know about top four, but anything is possible. There are 34 matches left to play."

Ramos has the ideal chance to get the critics off his back when his team face Poland's Wisla in the first leg of their first round tie.

Former Spurs coach Martin Jol was only given 14 games last season before he was sacked by the north London club.

"We have a good squad and I'm sure the team will go up. Last season I was in Spain and I didn't know the situation with Martin," added Ramos.

"It's difficult to make a comparison. I don't know the problems."
