Colette Sultana won three matches and lost one to finish fifth in the German Junior Open, one of the top tournaments in the European circuit. With this good placing in such a prestigious tournament, the Maltese Junior champion will now achieve a top 10 European ranking in the under 15 age group.
The tournament, which was held at the SquashPit club in Germering and at the Park Club Nymphenburg in Munich, was contested by over 200 players.
Sultana started the tournament with an easy win against Austrian girl Lisa Kaserer 11/2, 11/4, 11/4.
Next, the Maltese girl was up against much stiffer challenge. Michaela Malinova, who had beaten Colette in a previous tournament, started stronger and took the first game 11/8. Sultana was close to taking the second game, but the Slovak managed to snatch it 12/10 and then proceeded to seal the match with an 11/4 win in the third game.
In the third match Sultana saw off the Danish challenge from Christine Christoffersen in convincing manner, beating her in three straight games 11/5, 11/6, 11/5.
The final encounter for 5th and 6th place was against Aurora Vikström. The Finnish girl had beaten Sultana 3-0 in the Nordic Junior Open last September but this time it was sweet revenge for Colette who played at her best to win the match 11/6, 11/7, 11/9.
Colette Sultana is a member of the MOC Centre of Excellence and is receiving support through the MOC Youth Athlete Scheme, Malta Squash and the Marsa Sports Club. Colette is sponsored by Wilson and coached by Paul Lake.
