Squibs greet Sant's arrival in Għargħur

Labour leader Alfred Sant was welcomed with squibs (suffarelli) when he arrived in Għargħur yesterday evening.

A few tens of people waving MLP handkerchiefs and shouting "Fredu, Fredu" greeted Dr Sant as he disembarked from the Coach of Change, which yesterday also took him to Balzan, Attard and Mosta.

The coach's arrival was marked with a flurry of activity.

Someone was heard criticising the use of the squibs, which lit up the street and engulfed it in a cloud of smoke.

The sound of a hand-held siren filled the square in front of the church whenever Dr Sant paused in his short speech.

Sant said his party was promising a serious leadership and things that were doable.

He said many were saying that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi would change his Cabinet if re-elected, but he asked why he had not done so in the past four years. He questioned whether Dr Gonzi would continue defending his ministers and then expect people to take him seriously.
