"Science is fun for all, I can see it in the world around me"... used as part of the logo for last year's NSTF Science Week, St Augustine's College was determined to put this slogan into practice. The St Augustine's Science Club was founded with precisely this in mind last October. Its main activity this year focused on participation in the NSTF School Contest for Young Scientists held last March at St James Cavalier for secondary schoolchildren.

St Augustine's College presented a total of 12 projects prepared by groups of students aged 11-14. Most of these were research projects involving months of preparation both within the school premises and outside. It is amazing what young minds can come up with, given a little encouragement.

The college won first prize in the school contest with the project entitled "Air Pollution: What's the Solution?". The project was presented by Sander Grima, James Borg, Ambrose Galea, Gabriel Ellul and Neil Bugeja under the supervision of Dr Louise Grima. A project submitted by De La Salle College placed second and a group from St Aloysius College was awarded third prize.

What gave particular satisfaction to the Science teachers at St Augustine's were the students' comments: "We really enjoyed ourselves", "When are we going to do this again?", "We never imagined it would be so much fun!", "Thank you, thank you!". The teachers feel they should thank the students for making their job so worthwhile, so satisfactory.

The teachers will be accompanying the winners to Valbonne in France to take part in the Mediterranean ExpoScience between July 18 and 22 where they will have the opportunity to share their project with other students from all over the Mediterranean.
