St Catherine's High School in St Andrews bubbled with enthusiasm last month as owners of pets, including students, walked into the school to mark the launch of the school theme for this year - Connections.

On the strength of this theme, the school has taken on the responsibility to raise awareness in students, staff and parents on the importance of connecting with the earth, connecting with oneself, connecting with others, connecting with our national heritage and connecting with God. The celebration of Animal Awareness Week was one of the first channels to promote the theme.

Special events for the week were purposely organised by Ms Vanessa Attard, the theme's link person in the school. A sum of Lm290, including Lm120 which were donated to the Association for Abandoned Animals for the purchase of the animal ambulance, Lm100 to Island Sanctuary and Lm70 to the Thomasina Cat Sanctuary, were collected by the students who willingly gave up some of their pocket money to help homeless animals. The students also brought cans and boxes of dog and cat food to pass on to the animal sanctuaries.

Alfred Fenech, chairman of the Association for Abandoned Animals, was also present and took Bingo, a mongrel puppy abandoned by its owners.
