St Edward's College is commemorating the 75th anniversary since its foundation with a series of celebratory events.
St Edward's Day, yesterday, coincided with the college's Diamond Anniversary, making the programme of events on the day somewhat unique.
Henry Hornyold Strickland, Count della Catena, a relative of Lady Strickland, the foundress of St Edward's, planted a commemorative tree in the school gardens, followed by the unveiling of a celebratory plaque by President Eddie Fenech Adami.
Dr Fenech Adami praised the college for its contribution to education in Malta and for character building among its students.
Martin Scicluna, the chairman of St. Edward's College board of governors, said that over the past three-quarters of a century "St Edward's College has prepared all its students to be responsible members of Maltese society, invariably in leadership roles, with a well-honed sense of civic responsibility and devotion to duty".
Mass by Archbishop Joseph Mercieca followed.
St Edward's College was founded on October 1, 1928 on a military site which served as the old Cottonera hospital. In 1929 it was a school for 29 students. Today it caters for about 1,000 students.
