St George's were yesterday docked two points and fined Lm81 after being found responsible for the incidents that led to the abandonement of their Division One match against Senglea Athletic earlier this month. Senglea were awarded a 2-0 win.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Malta FA Council which looked into the incidents that occurred during the April 17 Cottonera clash at the Hibs Ground.
The incidents broke out only a few minutes after Glenn Bonello scored what seemed a legitimate goal on 78 minutes to put Senglea 2-1 ahead.
At this point, some St George's fans escaped the attention of the police officers, jumped over the fence and one of them hit assistant referee Alan Camilleri.
At first, referee Adrian Casha ordered the players to retreat to their own penalty areas but as the atmosphere remained tense, he then ordered the players off the pitch and suspended the match.
Yesterday's ruling has now all but ended St George's hopes of challenging for Premier League promotion as they are now seventh with 22 points.
The same cannot be said of Senglea who with the three points gained 'on the table' have now joined Mqabba in third place on 25 points... four adrift of leaders Hamrun and one behind Mosta with only two matches to go.
