In the first match from the third and final round of the GFA Division Two league, St Lawrence Spurs cruised to a 5-1 win over Qala St Joseph to consolidate their lead at the top of the standings.
As the scoreline clearly indicates, the Spurs dominated this match.
After going ahead thanks to an own goal by Nathan Portelli on six minutes, St Lawrence never looked back.
Gothard Conti scored twice in quick succession early in the second half before Qala's Denis Abela pulled one back on 67 minutes.
However, Shaun Muscat soon re-established the Spurs' three-goal advantage and Conti went on to complete his hat-trick three minutes from time.
In another match, Żebbuġ Rovers came from a goal down to beat Munxar Falcons 2-1 and revive their chances for the third spot.
A Franco Magrin own goal on 34 minutes put Munxar ahead but the Rovers hit strongly after the break and a Sylvan Galea brace, on 50 and 80 minutes, gave his side three precious points.
Hotspurs shocked
Xagħra United obtained a surprise 1-0 win over Victoria Hotspurs in the last match from the preliminary round of the BOV GFA Cup last week.
The Hotspurs were favourites to move into the next round but Xagħra were so effective with fast breaks. They could have gone in at half-time in front but Michael Bezzina and Philip Attard failed to score from good positions.
The Citizens looked more focused in the second half and Xagħra keeper Matthew Vella was called to make a series of fine saves to keep the underdogs in the match.
Xagħra then scored the goal that knocked out the Division One front-runners. With six minutes remaining, Bezzina took advantage of a defensive blunder in the opponents' box following a long throw-in and hit the ball past the Victoria keeper.
Meanwhile, Sannat Lions booked their place in the semi-finals of the cup competition following a 3-0 win over Oratory Youths.
Sannat opened the scoring early on through Mario Azzopardi and secured victory with two other goals, scored by Fernando de Andrade and Moussa Bamba, after the break.
