St Paul’s Bay Bypass to close for cycling championships
Four-hour closure on Sunday morning prompts frustration among motorists
St Paul’s Bay Bypass will be closed to traffic on Sunday morning as cyclists compete in the National Road championships.
Transport Malta urged drivers to seek alternative routes as the bypass will be closed, in both directions, from 6.30am to 10.30am.
The road race is the last of the National Championships, bringing to a close the 2026 competitive cycling season, crowning Malta’s top cyclists.
However, the news of the road closure was met with some dismay as drivers expressed their “frustration” on Transport Malta’s Facebook post.
One social media user pointed out key thoroughfares are closed “every single Sunday, either Coast Road, St Paul’s Bay Bypass or even Zebbug bypass sometimes”.
He suggested the event could be held at Ta’ Qali where roads are “always mainly quiet at those times”.
“Can’t you just host this event over there? Away from traffic instead of closing a major road for four hours,” he added, while another proposed Marsa Sports Ground as alternative venue.
