Nature Trust (Malta) has condemned the recent erection of a wooden flight of stairs in the middle of the sand dune at Golden Bay on the site where, it said, illegally built steps were demolished by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority some months ago.

The development in question was deplorable in view of the ecological importance of sand dunes.

The NGO said a development application existed before MEPA (PA. No. 01368/01) but this only refered to the construction of a wooden terrace in front of the internet cafe below and not to the flight of steps.

It believed the authority should demolish the flight of stairs and the internet cafe should be re-sited to a new location at the beach, rather than in the middle of the dune.
