I refer to the article San Anton Cats Well-Fed and Loved (October 28). At first glance all would seem well but, let us face it, anybody who is up for scrutiny (as is the case with the landscaping consortium right now) would obviously be putting their best foot forward, especially when they are visited by members of the press. But I can assure Ronald Cuschieri, who speaks on behalf of the consortium, that as far as I am concerned his "mission" to placate us "animal lovers" has failed miserably on several counts.

It may be true that the cats we saw in the photo still look healthy but that is only due to the regular care they were receiving prior to their arrival at Wied Incita just a short while ago. Anybody who knows anything about cats will confirm that to ensure good health they must be given good quality cat food which is low in magnesium and which contains a number of important elements, including "Taurine", which is absolutely vital to a cat's health.

With all due respect to Rita Cachia, feeding cats from a "cupboard full of mackerel and home cooked meals" does not only fall short of vital feline nutrition but in a few short weeks it will cause not only chronic diarrhoea but in some cases urinary and kidney problems which if left untreated can prove fatal.

Knowing all this we can hardly be impressed by the knowledge that "all the cats have names and that they are loved" because as a regular feeder I know first hand the physical and financial sacrifices people like myself make for these animals, not because they were imposed on us but because we choose to do it 365 days a year. Therefore the words "care and commitment" make more sense to us and that is why we fear for the future of these cats. Who will feed and care for the cats on weekends and during the lengthy Christmas and other holidays? And when one of them is sick, what then?

Will anybody even be there to notice? Miss Cachia said they were open to suggestions. A bit late I would say but since what they did was unacceptable to start off with may I suggest that they engage the help of a trustworthy organisation, such as the National Cat Society, and return the cats from where they came while they are still in good health. Nothing short of this will "placate us".
