Christopher Lee Gatt, 20, was given a two-year jail term suspended for four years after he pleaded guilty to stealing number plates, using false licence plates, driving recklessly and driving without a licence.
He was further disqualified from having a driving licence for one year.
Gatt was stopped by mobile squad police after Joseph Bonett of Marsaxlokk, from whom the number plates had been stolen, called the police and followed Gatt in his car, keeping the police informed of Gatt's whereabouts over a mobile phone.
Bonnett is facing separate charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Gatt on January 6, after he allegedly stamped his foot on Gatt's head while Gatt was being restrained on the ground by the police.
Inspector Carmelo Magri prosecuted.
