Enemalta seems to have a nice mix of activities, rightly celebrating its 25th anniversary next month. It would make much sense also to mark this event with the introduction of full cut-off street lights in Malta, something which is standard practice abroad. These are easily recognisable as having a flat-glass bottom, rather than the glass bowl typical of all our street lanterns, which throw up light above the horizontal. Full cut-off lanterns would finally cut down on energy waste and light pollution.

Use of full cut-off street lighting should be required from local councils as well, now that they have been given a major role in the installation and maintenance of street lighting in residential areas. Local councils should also be held accountable and made to pay for electricity consumption from any new lighting installations they come up with.
