Birkirkara earned a historic point in their final game of Group 6 of the UEFA Women's Champions League after holding Cardiff Met Women of Wales to a 2-2 draw.
In their sixth participation, the Stripes have managed to record their first point in this competition, becoming the second Maltese club to chalk up at least a point in the qualifying stage after Hibernians did so in 2015 when they secured a 3-3 draw against KI Klaksvik.
The game was fairly-balanced until Cardiff managed to break the deadlock on 11 minutes, when Erin Murray dribbled past Janice Xuereb to send the ball into empty net.
Birkirkara managed to stage a reaction and they levelled terms through Raina Giusti who poked the ball into the far net from close-range, to score the Stripes' second goal of the tournament.
Nonetheless, their joy was cut short as Cardiff took the lead again when Stephanie Turner profited from a miscommunication at the back, to strike the ball past Birkirkara's custodian.
However, Melania Bajada's clan found a way to snatch a point with newly-signed Ylenia Carabott who fired a splendid volley from outside the area, registering her first goal for the club since arriving from rivals Hibernians.
Birkirkara will face Hibernians in the Super Cup on September 18 while they will open their title defence on October 16 against the same opponents.
