A stone was thrown at the leader of the Opposition's car late yesterday as it was being driven to the airport to pick up Simon Busuttil, the PN said this morning.

The incident happened as it was being driven through December 13 Road.

The windscreen was badly damaged and the front part of the roof of the car was dented. No one was injured.

The case has been reported to the police.

The Labour Party condemned the incident and said it hoped the police would quickly establish what happened.

The Speaker of the House, Anglu Farrugia, also condemned the incident and called for anyone having information about it to inform the police.

President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca condemned the incident in a statement in the afternoon.

DRIVER, COUNCIL REPORT SIMILAR INCIDENTS

Meanwhile, a reader told Times of Malta today that a similar incident happened to him on Tuesday.

The man said he was driving along December 13 Road at about 9pm when he heard what sounded 'like an explosion' on his car just as he drove under a bridge near the Yellow Pages establishment.

This is a serious accident waiting to happen. I could have lost control of the car

He stopped further up the road and called the emergency number 112 to report the incident. However, fortunately for him, no damage was caused to his car.

When he phoned the police he was told such incidents were being reported every day.

"This is a serious accident waiting to happen. I could have lost control of the car, and I had a 10-month-old baby on board," the reader said.

Meanwhile, the Marsa council also said this was not the first incident of its kind where unknown individuals had hurled items from bridges onto oncoming vehicles.

"Although it's not easy to identify the perpetrators, who can cause fatalities with these kinds of acts, the council is suggesting the installation of security cameras on such overhead bridges," said the Marsa council, which also condemned the incident on the Opposition leader's car.
