A strong partnership for a shared future

It is an honour to introduce myself to the people of Malta as the United States ambassador. I am deeply grateful to President Donald J. Trump for this privilege to serve the American people in such a beautiful and historically significant nation. I pledge to serve nobly as a steward of our valued partnership.

President Trump was elected with a resounding mandate to advance global stability, expand economic opportunity, and safeguard security for America and the international community. President Trump champions the patriotic principle – one for which our ancestors fought bravely – that every nation has the right to govern, defend and take pride in its own identity. As ambassador, I am committed to carrying his agenda forward and ensuring Malta’s voice is heard.

Deepening our strong partnership

Malta, a jewel of the Mediterranean, stands at the crossroads of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, making it a vital partner in advancing shared goals of security, prosperity and freedom. Thirty per cent of the world’s annual merchant shipping passes through near waters. Malta Freeport ranks 12th among the top European ports and is a significant transshipment hub for global trade, including container traffic to and from America.

Malta and the United States have a shared interest in preserving freedom of navigation through the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, which is foundational for the logistical and industrial capabilities that drive Malta’s impressive economic growth, and makes both of our countries more prosperous.  

Working alongside our Maltese partners, we will continue to counter transnational crime and maritime sanctions evasion, combat illicit financing and mitigate illegal migration. Malta faces real pressures from human trafficking and drug smuggling. We will work together to strengthen law enforcement cooperation to confront these nefarious activities, which must stop.

Economic growth and innovation are also central to President Trump’s vision for a world defined by opportunity and self-reliance. As a dynamic hub of Mediterranean commerce, Malta presents valuable opportunities to expand US economic ties with the region.

Energy is one promising area. Malta could become a destination for US liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, which would diversify the source of Malta’s energy and enhance its energy security. American expertise in energy innovation can also play a transformative role in Malta’s future. 

Beyond energy, I cheered Delta Airlines’ announcement of new direct flights between the United States and Malta to begin in June 2026, a significant step that will foster greater opportunities for travel, tourism, trade and cultural exchange. I also look forward to working with the Deputy Prime

Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism to highlight Malta’s authentic, sophisticated experiences.

I strongly believe in ‘people’s diplomacy’, a phrase coined by America’s first female ambassador, Eugenie Anderson.  I am passionate about promoting cultural and educational exchanges between our two countries, knowing these interactions nurture respect and build life-long relationships.

I am particularly excited about initiatives that connect US and Maltese youth. Supporting student exchanges, academic collaborations and cultural  programmes will build a more interconnected and vibrant global community.

A personal commitment to service

This role is not just a professional duty; it is a deeply personal calling. With humble heart, I am grateful to the Trinity, through whose grace I am here.

My Virginia upbringing, shaped by my parents’ values of patriotism and purpose, instilled in me a life-long commitment to service. My father, a Korean War hero, and my mother, who inspired me to leave the world better than I found it, are my guiding lights.

I am thankful to my husband, Jonathan, for his love. So too, Jonathan’s mother served as US ambassador to Luxembourg; following in her diplomatic footsteps is an honour. I thank President Trump for entrusting me with this responsibility and profound privilege.

Looking ahead

As I take up my post in Malta, I do so with gratitude, enthusiasm and determination. The United States and Malta share a rich history and a promising future. We will unabashedly pursue opportunities to strengthen our partnership and advance our shared vision of peace, prosperity and security.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the warm welcome I have received from the Maltese. I admire your cultural heritage, resilience and achievements.

As I embark on this journey, I will listen, learn and work hand-in-hand with Maltese partners to achieve our shared priorities and further strengthen our friendship forged over centuries.

It is said that there is no greater honour than to serve one’s country.  It is a privilege to lead the outstanding US Embassy team in Malta. I look forward to the many opportunities before us and to the lasting friendships we will forge.
