The Kerygma Movement has presented its annual Youth of the Year Award to Amy Zahra, a university student from Marsaxlokk.

The movement’s president, Joseph Abela, said that in February last year Ms Zahra was rushed to hospital suffering meningitis and was only given 12 hours to live.

But she pulled through, albeit at a high price, losing both her feet and her fingers. Yet she returned to her university course and set up a group, called Amy’s Friends, who worked to improve accessibility on campus. The group also raised funds to help students in similar situations as Amy’s.

Amy is also holding talks to motivate people to appreciate the positives in life and not to be disheartened in tough times.

She also regularly visits hospital to encourage patients overcome their hardship.

Ms Zahra was presented with the Rudolph Saliba trophy, named after the late first president of the Kerygma Movement.
