I have come to the conclusion that Joe Borg of Xgharja, besides being ridiculously ignorant on the subject, may also be a genuine presumptuous delusional. At no time, not in opinions, letters or speeches, have I ever claimed that sugar is or was used in bread as a preservative. I have always said that it is used to activate the yeast. So his accusation of a changed stance is sheer fiction.

I also wish to point out that Mr Borg only attempts to cover his ignorance on the use of sugar by useless stories of horror and which have nothing to do with the fact that the Maltese public is incurring another EU imposed levy. Over-indulgence in any way, shape or form is a health hazard - even the least informed child knows that, but certainly does not need any instruction or misinformation by the least competent in the subject

As for the EU negotiations, the public can judge if the "give and take" worked out to Malta's benefit or not as they face higher taxes, higher food costs, fewer holidays and overtime and weaker competitiveness. The feeble Nationalist government negotiators desperately "gave" far too much, too easily and failed to duly protect the Maltese and "take" enough.

As an opposition spokesman it is my duty to expose this to the public, especially when a minister tries to project such a failure as an "achievement", as was attempted in the case of the scandalous subsidies on sugar. As a result of my parliamentary questions, the minister was forced to admit that all the subsidy on sugar was to be paid by the Maltese government, that is, the Maltese taxpayers.

Apparently, it is fine to capriciously pay exorbitant levies on some products to protect other EU processors but, at the same time, it is not necessary to protect the Maltese processors and the Maltese consumer.

Please, no more misinformation on sugar and bread.
