Sulphur in diesel

In his letter "Down to earth diesel" (August 29), your correspondent said that "diesel ex-Enemalta" now has a sulphur content of 0.05 per cent. This is not correct. The diesel fuel currently being sold by Enemalta has a maximum sulphur content of 0.035 per cent or 35 ppm. The new EN 590 diesel has been available since the last week of June this year.

The first time Enemalta Corporation reduced the sulphur content in diesel was in September, 2000. The sulphur content was initially reduced from 0.5 per cent to 0.2 per cent. Subsequently, in February, 2001, Enemalta started importing low sulphur diesel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.055 per cent.

The introduction of the new EN590 fuel (which has a maximum sulphur content of 0.035 per cent) represents a total reduction of 93 per cent in the sulphur contained in diesel since September 2000.
