Team Malta's participation in the squash singles competition ended in the Last 32 stage after Colette Sultana, Diane Kellas and Dan Zammit Lewis all suffered identical 3-0 defeats.

Sultana had opened her commitments with a comfortable 3-0 win over Samantha Hennings, of Cayman Islands, in the round of 64.

Sultana was always in command taking the first three sets 11-7, 11-3 and 11-4.

Next up for Sultana was a far more difficult assignment when she was up against world no. 6 Nicol David of Malaysia, considered by many to be the greatest squash player of all time.

As expected, David proved too strong for Sultana as the former world no.1 breezed to a straight sets victory.

There was no joy for  Kellas who after she was awarded a bye in the round of 64   she then suffered a 3-0 defeat to Australia's Christine Nunn in the last 32.

Nunn proved too good on the day as she took the opening three sets 11-3, 11-3 and 11-2.

In the men's singles, Zammit Lewis battled past Kale Wilson, of Trinidad and Tobago, 3-0.

The Maltese player edged a tight opening set 13-11 before winning the next two sets with an identical 11-8 scoreline to seal his win.

Zammit Lewis was then up against Lewis Walters, of Jamaica, who had defeated Welsh player Peter Creed 3-1.

Walters won the opening set 11-7 but Zammit Lewis looked set to level the match when he led the second set 7-4.

However, the Jamaican fought back to take the set 11-9 before sealing his win when winning the third 11-4.
