A couple from the Republic of Georgia were yesterday given an 18-month jail term suspended for three years when they admitted to stealing several items from eight retail outlets in Sliema.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano heard Jimsher Abdaladze, 47, and his wife Bela Babunashviti, 46, plead guilty to stealing clothes and other items from Miss Selfridge, Promod, Marks and Spencer's, Memory Lane, Morgan, Next, BHS and Square Deal in the past two months.

On handing down judgement the magistrate noted that the couple had filed an early guilty plea and had returned the stolen items.

Police Inspector Daniel Zammit prosecuted.

Lawyer Patrick Valentino appeared for the couple.
