A Libyan man was yesterday given a three-year jail term suspended for four years for breaking into a Sliema apartment and stealing cash and other items from its occupants.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera found 25-year-old Mohammed Megrati guilty of stealing $500, a mobile phone and other items to the detriment of Libyans Emad Harrus and Taha Mohammed Farhat on July 31, 2004.

The magistrate heard how Megrati and another two men, armed with a knife, broke into the Sliema apartment when Harrus and Farhat were asleep at about 5 a.m. and ordered them to hand over their belongings.

On handing down judgement the magistrate noted that Megrati had a clean criminal record.

Police Inspector Daniel Zammit prosecuted.
