A woman was given a one-year jail term suspended for two years for defrauding another woman of Lm4,300 when she collected money on false pretences.
Magistrate Giovanni Grixti found Theresa Bugeja, 66, guilty of defrauding Theresa Xerri when she collected money, claiming it was for the Archpriest of the Victoria cathedral.
Grixti heard Bugeja explain that a certain Alfred Gerada had threatened her into collecting the money for him to buy a new car. But the magistrate ruled that Bugeja had not produced any evidence that proved she had been forced to collect the money.
Police Inspector Paul Vassallo prosecuted.
