When I transferred money to Italy (by SWIFT), I was still charged a fee even though there was no currency exchange. Isn't the whole idea about entering the euro area that there are no charges? SWIFT transactions still carry an administrative (handling)...

When I transferred money to Italy (by SWIFT), I was still charged a fee even though there was no currency exchange. Isn't the whole idea about entering the euro area that there are no charges?

SWIFT transactions still carry an administrative (handling) charge, but, as there are no longer charges related to the exchange of Maltese lira to euro, the total charges should be lower. In the coming years, it is likely that such charges will be reduced further, as the EU implements the Single European Payment Area framework.
