Swimmer dies following Għadira Bay rescue

55-year-old man had to be pulled ashore in Mellieħa on Tuesday evening

A 55-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty at Għadira Bay on Tuesday evening.

The man, a resident of Mellieħa, was brought out of the water after the alarm was raised at 6.30pm.

He was given first aid on shore and taken to hospital in an ambulance but died shortly after, police said on Wednesday.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud is holding an inquiry.

The tragedy was the second involving bathers on Tuesday, with a diving instructor dying early in the morning after an accident in Ċirkewwa on Sunday. 

A swimmer was also found unconscious off Buġibba on Tuesday afternoon. The 38-year-old from Nepal was rescued by Red Cross members and is receiving hospital treatment.
