Swimming 'not recommended' at Wied iż-Żurrieq due to recent sewage overflow

Bathers advised to avoid the area as a precaution until water tested as safe

Health authorities have warned against swimming at Wied Iż-Żurrieq in Qrendi following a recent sewage spill in the area.

The area is a popular swimming spot for locals and tourists, while also serving as a pick-up point for boat excursions to the nearby Blue Grotto.

In a statement, the Environmental Health Directorate said swimming in the area was not recommended until further notice "due to a recent sewage overflow into the sea from cesspits belonging to private property".

"Although the overflow has now stopped, the incident may have impacted bathing water quality and could pose a potential risk to public health."

Bathers are advised to avoid the area as a "precautionary measure" until the water quality has been deemed safe, the directorate said.

While not offering a timeframe for the closure, it said updates would be issued as necessary.

Investigations by health authorities are ongoing.
