Various young footballers from local nursery clubs yesterday took part in a symbolic ceremony at the National Stadium, to coincide with UEFA's 50th anniversary.
Among a series of events to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, all 52 UEFA members yesterday marked the occasion by releasing several blue and gold balloons, something which was repeated during yesterday's EURO 2004 matches in Portugal.
"We have invited all member associations to join us in releasing thousands of blue and gold balloons across Europe as a symbolic way of marking the occasion," said jubilee co-ordinator Keith Cooper.
"We have encouraged the associations to involve children in this little ceremony - not just because balloons are appealing to youngsters, but because we think it's important to use the anniversary to trigger the younger generation's awareness of UEFA's past."
At Ta' Qali, Malta FA officials and coaches accompanied the children for a tour of the facilities at the Millennium Stand. The Times photographer Alfred Giglio was on the spot when 50 special balloons, some carrying cards that could be exchanged for next year's Champions League final besides other UEFA souvenirs, were let go.
