Symposium on Emergency Medicine and Resuscitation

Last Sunday the Emergency Department of St Luke's Hospital organised the First Maltese Emergency Medicine and Resuscitation Symposium. The symposium was convened by Dr Mary Rose Cassar and took place over one day at the Corinthia San Gorg Hotel. Various locally and internationally distinguished guest speakers gave presentations and presented the results of their research.

The symposium, attended by about 180 delegates, was opened by Health Minister Dr Louis Deguara. The minister extolled the work of the emergency physicians and the Emergency Department in Malta and praised the symposium itself as evidence of the progress achieved locally in this field.

The guest of honour at the symposium was Dr David Zideman, an internationally renowned physician in the field of resuscitative medicine, who chairs the European Resuscitation Council. He praised the newly formed Malta Resuscitation Council and emphasised the importance of having the Maltese representation in the European setting.

The highlight of the symposium was the reciprocal signing by Dr Zideman for the European Resuscitation Council and Dr Mario Zerafa for the Malta Resuscitation Council of a formal agreement between the two councils, which was described as another prestigious milestone for Maltese doctors and again underscores Malta's position in the world medical map.

This association will facilitate and enhance the work of Maltese emergency physicians and help to further improve the services they offer to our country.
