A seminar on illegal migration and refugees held in Malta this week was attended by 50 youths from seven European countries.

Held at the Stock Exchange, in Valletta, the seminar concluded the 10-day youth exchange programme organised by TDM2000 Malta.

President Emeritus Guido de Marco told participants the humanitarian aspect of the problem should be considered at all times and that awareness and knowledge were the keys to solving the numerous problems causing the present flow of irregular migrants.

He stressed that one must understand the plight of these migrants in search of a better life.

The debate centred around the fact that the human rights of illegal migrants and asylum seekers had to be respected.

A heated speech by an Italian participant reminded the delegates of the times when millions of Europeans were forced by dire economic circumstances to emigrate to the US, Canada and other countries.
