FOI Council member and Environment Committee chairman Godwin C. Micallef was invited by GreenPak, a non-profit organisation established to operate the Green Dot system locally, to participate in a workshop about Packaging Waste Collection and Recovery and Contracting Organisations.
The workshop, held in Brussels on January 20 and 21, aimed to provide training for personnel from each of the EU accession countries' newly established packaging waste recovery organisations.
These organisations are established to assist in the achievement of the recovery and recycling targets for packaging waste as set down in Directive 94/62/EC. Emphasis was placed on drawing from the experience of the existing organisations. The workshop was organised by TAIEX (Technical Assistance Information Exchange Office - DG Enlargement - European Commission) in co-operation with EUROPEN - European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment - and ASSURE.
Accession countries taking part along with Malta were Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. There were also representatives from Turkey, Greece and Spain. Presentations were also made by GreenDot organisations in France, Belgium and Austria.
