The implementation of an agreement on scientific and technological cooperation signed between Malta and China in 2002 was discussed between Education Minister Louis Galea and a visiting Chinese delegation.

The delegation is headed by Deng Nan, Vice Minister of Science and Technology.

The 2002 agreement is based on the mutual understanding that science and technology is an essential part of the economic and social development of the two countries. It provides for the pooling of resources in research and development projects, exchanges of scientists, experts and materials, joint seminars and workshops, and other forms of cooperation. The agreement also provides for the mutual safeguarding of intellectual property rights.

Dr Galea spoke about the Maltese proposals for cooperation in the field of science and technology and particularly on the involvement of Maltese educational institutions, the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) and the Malta Techno-Park.

He said the University of Malta has a large number (over 100) of inter-university agreements particularly in Europe.

Dr Galea said there should be cooperation between the Maltese science and technology agency and similar institutions in China. He also recommended the twinning of the Malta Techno-Park with a similar Chinese high-tech park.

The minister signed an agreement with China which provides for the donation of over 20 China-made Legend computers which will be installed at the University of Malta and used for scientific research purposes.

The five-member Chinese delegation leaves Malta tomorrow.
