Nigerian and Ghanaian officials yesterday discussed with Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici procedures for repatriating migrants to their countries.
The officials are in Malta attending a conference on illegal immigration. The Ghanaian delegation is headed by Quasi Apea-Kubi, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs. Muhammad Babandede, Head of Immigration, led the Nigerian delegation.
In separate meetings with Dr Mifsud Bonnici, the delegations discussed procedures to send failed asylum seekers back to their respective countries of origin.
The majority of asylum seekers who fail to obtain refugee status or subsidiary protection are either Ghanaian or Nigerian. Travel documents are required by the Maltese immigration authorities for failed asylum seekers to be repatriated.
