A "drunk" mother charged into a Zejtun school and attacked the assistant head and other workers, the Malta Union of Teachers said.

Details about the incident are still sketchy, but MUT president Kevin Bonello told timesofmalta.com the woman charged into Zejtun School B looking for her children who had already been picked up by her husband.

Soon, she started arguing with a teacher before becoming embroiled in an argument with the assistant head of school, ransacking his office in the process, Mr Bonello said. Despite repeated attempts by staff members, the woman refused to calm down. It is the first incident of the sort this scholastic year.

The union appealed for schools to be adequately equipped when it came to security measures.

The MUT thanked the police for their immediate intervention to control the situation and expressed solidarity with the police officer who also ended up beaten up and attacked.

The union appealed to the ministry to take the necessary action to ensure such actions are not repeated. Despite several promises made by the previous administration, there have been little developments to ensure similar incidents are avoided.
