The Association for Teachers Education in Europe is holding its 28th international conference at the University of Malta.
The conference, discussing the theme "Becoming teachers in a learning organisation - meeting the challenges of the learning society" was opened by Education Minister Louis Galea on Sunday. It ends tomorrow.
A total of 300 experts in the field of teacher training from 55 countries, mainly from Europe, are attending.
In his opening address, Dr Galea said the education authorities' next move following the launch of the national minimum curriculum and the publication of the strategic plan for its implementation, was the reorganisation through decentralisation of the state schooling system.
He said this was a move where the input of the Faculty of Education and the university were required to promote qualitative and informed national dialogue.
Dr Galea also referred to the setting up of a working committee to prepare a draft national strategic plan for lifelong learning aimed at identifying the parameters for a learning society, saying that the committee was due to present its report shortly.
